Stop it spinning either by wedging a screwdriver into the ring gear by removing the timing plug and inserting one or put it in gear and apply the rear brake.

The stator, so called 'cos it's static.
> Is that all ther is?
Yup ! Remove the wires from the stator, noting where they go, then remove the stator by undoing the three bolts on the outside. Be careful as you take it off and put it back on not to break the carbon brushes that rub on the slip rings, those two copper rings on the end of the rotor.

No just the stator which rarely fails. The rotor you remove by taking out the 6mm Allen bolt from the centre then inserting a sawn off 6mm bolt about 45mm long into the hole and then put the allen bolt back and tighten it onto the sawn off bit of bolt. When it has tightened down, if the rotor doesn't just pop off into your hand, (be ready to catch it.) give the end of the allen bolt a couple of taps with an 'ammer, this rarely fails to dislodge it.

the wires attached to the

Note where they go and remove them, write numbers on the stator with a texta if you like and label the wires.
