PC Computer Services is committed to the responsible supply
& use computers, however, we understand that "People
are reluctant to throw away something that has been so
expensive [to buy]".
"If you can reduce the number of computers you buy in
your lifetime by one or two machines, you'll be doing a great
deal to tackle the e-waste problem."
Partly inspired by the Make
Poverty History campaign and the desire to promote waste
reduction, we are investigating the feasibility of collecting
old computers and shipping them to communities living in
poverty.
We would love to see those in poor communities have some of
the opportunities we in the west simply take for granted,
including computers and internet access for education. There
are a number of initiatives already underway, including wireless internet to remote communities in
Africa, Microsoft Unlimited Potential, etc
Our aim is not simply to deliver computers and run, but to
provide training and support so that communities can develop
themselves. "What makes ...[the African] project unique
is that rather than just providing wireless technology, it
teaches the community to build the technology itself".

at risk?
|
Although viruses
are still a major threat to your internet & email
experience, many other threats exist. These
include:
* Hack attacks where hackers try to enter your computer
illegally and steal info or use your computer for illegal
activities
* Browser hijacking where companies try to redirect your
internet experience to their marketing machine
* Email frauds (especially those that
ask you to confirm your bank details and pin number by
clicking on a link)
* Spyware & malware that attempt to send you direct
marketing
* Microsoft Windows software with security floors that have
not been fixed
Recommended solutions include using quality antivirus,
firewall and spyware software and ensuring your computer has
all the necessary software updates and patches.

Self Help
|
Computer won't boot
up? Maybe your computer powers on but does not finish loading
Windows. Try running your computer in "Safe Mode" -
a special diagnostic mode for troubleshooting problems.
Here's how to startup in Safe Mode:
Hold down the F8 function key after the computer has finished
doing its initial hardware tests (POST). A menu should appear.
Type the number for Safe Mode and your computer should startup
in safe mode.
