The
day was long but the track easy and Jajar made good time many travelers
passed him by and he stopped often to trade tales of the days past
he found out that there had been many deaths on this road at night
for wild animals ravage the woods for food and as he guessed he would
be counted as food if they had found him.
Thanking
the gods for keeping him safe he rounded a bend in the road and there
before him was the entrance to the small but famous training town
of Lasler,His steps quickened with excitement and was soon in the
town proper, nothing was as he expected searching the many shops he
found John training young students like himself.
The
days passed quickly as Jajar studied and practiced he also did small
errands for the town lord and was rewarded with items that had magical
powers this was the first he knew of such things and amazed at magic
that flowed from the cloak he had been given and the town itself had
a power of its own.
With
a now inner joy he started to study magic and found with practice
he could make a small light that would dance in the palm of his hand
and light his way in the many dark places in Lasler.
The
days drew into months and Jajar became adept with many magical skills
and his power with the sword stunned many who watched him train,Jajar
Knew it would be soon time to leave Lasler and go out into the world
but first he had heard of 2 marks that the gods would grant if he
could show that he was worthy.
Jajar
had heard tales of an old man in the forest that would guide him and
tell him about the marks but when he ask the old man the old man said
to go find leaves to Jajar it didn't make sense but off he went in
search of leaves.
Kicking
dirt in front of the armor shop Jajar thought about what the old man
had told him and he started talking to the older boys about the leaves
they just laugh at Jajar and said if it was easy it would not be a
test to see if he was worthy,Jajar thought about this and decided
to get these leaves and see what happened.
The
first 2 leaves were not to hard to find one in the grave yard and
the other in the caverns north of town but the third leaf was hidden
in the forest and Jajar knew it was guarded by a dragon there he had
heard tales of many who attempted to get the leaf and of how they
entered the forest but did not return.
Jajar
counted his coin and the gold he had left would buy him a few more
things and the torch he bought for the caverns was near all used up
he went back to the store and purchase a new torch and some rations
as he did not know how deep in the forest the leaf would be and wanted
to be ready for almost any event.
With
his sword and torch in hand his pack jammed full he entered the forest
his heart pounding and his courage at a low ebb slowly he searched
passing the old man who smiled and wished him luck.
Following
a faint trail Jajar made steady passage into the deep forest and almost
as he came to a dead end the woods open before him so he thought this
is the gods way of aiding him further in he became confused as to
which direction he should take but like a guiding light the trail
would become clear again the forest broke into uneven ground and the
trail began to rise up the side of a mountain Jajar passed on but
as he looked back behind the trail had changed scared now he strode
softly not wanting to let any know he was about he entered a small
cave
and there was a low rumbling sound in the pitch dark lighting his
torch Jajar could see no further then the dim light could penetrate
stepping lightly now Jajar crept deeper into the cavern just barely
visible ahead there was a form but exactly what he could not tell,
what to do Jajar thought he wondered for a few minutes but no idea's
came to mind.
Screaming
like a demon from hell something pounced on Jajar but Jajar was quick
to lift his sword and barely counted the first blow the power of which
jarred his arm almost making him cry out with pain, blow after blow
he dodged or blocked but Jajar knew in his heart this demon was not
going to let him live, Jajar fell back against the wall of the cave
using it to support him as the blows rained down on his leather armor
and he fought back but in vain he knew that if he stayed here he would
surely die, pushing off from the wall he flung out his sword in a
wide arc hitting the demon and making it jump back, taking the small
brake from the onslaut Jajar ran deeper into the cavern he ran like
death was after him ,which to be honest was after him, he ran headlong
into a wall that almost knocked him out laying there breathing heavily
he tired to listen and make his heart stop pounding like a drum for
he thought the demon would hear him and be on him again but luck had
it that the demon did not follow Jajar and slowly he gained his wits
and looked around the cave he had run into it was larger now but the
low rumbling sound was closer, peering round a bend in the cave Jajar
could see a large dragon sleeping in a huge ball in the middle of
the cavern, taking this as a omen he slipped passed the dragon into
a smaller room there on the floor lay a large pile of gold, knowing
dragons this must be his hoard there beside the gold was also a tiny
golden leaf Jajar swooped on the leaf with joy he look at the gold
but decided luck would not help if the dragon woke and his gold was
gone for surely the dragon would track him down and kill him so Jajar
left the gold where it lay and took his spell book out and cast the
recall spell which he had been taught.
