Grouped into 3 categories
Strain occurs when the muscle is stretched beyond its capacity, but not torn.
Tears occur when the muscle is stretched so far that is partially or completely tears.
Strains and tears often occur during fast and/or vigorous muscle contractions such as
when lifting heavy objects and taking off to run. Corks often occur during contact sports such
as football. Stains, tears and corks all cause bleeding into surrounding muscle.
This is called a haematoma.

Early appropriate management is essential to prevent loss of movement, re-injury and complications such as bone formation in
the muscle.
Treatment in the first 3 days involves:
Rest
Ice
Compression bandaging
Elevation
Pain free movement of adjacent joints
Treatment after 3 days includes:
Stretching
Strengthening
Gradual return to daily activities, work and sport.
