Tennis elbow (or lateral epicondylitis) is an overuse condition involving pain and
swelling on the outer side of the elbow. It is caused by prolonged use of the forearm
muscles for gripping activities (such as racquet sports and toolwork).

Who does it affect?
Tennis and squash players, weight lifters and those involved in toolwork commonly
develop tennis elbow. It may develop slowly over time, or after only one episode of
a gripping activity if you are unaccustomed to that activity.

Symptoms
Elbow pain during gripping activities or racquet sports.
Tenderness and swelling on outer part of elbow.

Diagnosis
Pain in the elbow can have many causes. Hastings physiotherapists can identify the cause of elbow pain.

Management
Treatment should be sought promptly from your physiotherapist.
Rest from aggravating activities
Ice
Massage and stretches to address muscle imbalances
Specific strengthening exercises
Ultrasound
Tennis elbow brace to redistribute stress in the elbow
Anti-inflammatory medication or cortisone injections may be administered by your doctor.

Outlook
The earlier the appropriate management is implemented, the better the prognosis.
Once established, tennis elbow is slower to respond to treatment.
With a comprehensive stretching and strengthening program the symptoms usually respond quickly.
