usually occurs when the ankle rolls inwards or outwards.

Symptoms
Pain and swelling develop soon after the injury. It will often be difficult to bear
weight on the injured foot. The ankle may feel unstable.

Diagnosis
Your physiotherapist will assess which ligament has been damaged and how severe the
injury is. He/She will be able to tell you how long the ankle needs to be rested. Your
physiotherapist can also arrange for further investigation if a fracture is suspected.

Management
Immediate management and physiotherapy will result in a good outcome.
For the first three days, it is important to follow the RICE regime of Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.
Following this, your physiotherapist will gradually help you restore full ankle movement and strength. Strapping or orthotics may be provided if necessary and suggested by your physiotherapist. Failing to seek appropriate treatment often leads to ankle stiffness and balance deficits, making a re-injury more likely.

Outlook
Depending on the severity of the ankle sprain, normal activity and sports may be resumed after 2 weeks to 2 months, if treatment is sought immediately. Return to sport should be gradual and guided by your physiotherapist.
Hasting's Physiotherapists will be happy to confidentially discuss any of your concerns.
