Friends of Courage

"Some days I just need someone to be there, when its hard, to make a cuppa, take the washing off the line, that would help so much on the hard days".

"I just can't think, I don't want to think too much, let alone worry about eating, shopping or paying bills".

"It was my son's birthday, I couldn't leave the house, it isn't fair he has to suffer to".

"I'd like to start walking again, I did that a lot before you know, never worried about it then, I can't go now, can't bring myself to walk alone, you just don't know who is out there, do you".

Having the support of family & friends is critical in the ability to heal from a horrific and traumatic experience.  Many services are over-worked and under funded, there are possibly thousands of victims who never contact a service or reach out for support.  There are times when just lifting your head from the pillow is the most challenging thing you will do that day.

There is nothing worse than trying to keep filling a cup that is already full, eventually it spills out or the glass breaks.  We certainly acknowledge the wonderful support from our counsellors, but 1hr a week (if you are fortunate enough) is not enough, especially during those challenging moments.

My dream is to see a home-volunteer support service for victims and survivors of sexual assault.  There are such services available within other high need areas of the community, volunteer support programs provided in other countries which I would like to see adopted here.

This is a big challenge and as we know change is slow.  We need committees, funding, organisation and a great deal of volunteer enthusiasm, I won't be able to do this alone.

If you would like to share your ideas, can provide help, would like to speak more, drop us a line.

We will keep you up-to-date with our progress.
