Welcome to the Courage website.

Courage began from the need by one survivor to find practical support within a supportive, safe environment and find a positive way in which to direct her anger and frustrations as a survivor of sexual assault.

In 2003 more than 11000 reports of sexual assault were referred to the NSW Police, only 51 of these led to a conviction.  It is estimated by Criminologists there are more than 60,000 victims of sexual assault in NSW each year, which means over 49,000 crimes of violence go unreported.

Women of all ages are victims of sexual assault. The myths and stereotypes about sexual assault prevent many victims from reporting this abhorrent crime to police.  The silence of people, in not speaking out about the violence against women in their communities only strengthen myths and shows a society in denial of the impact of sexual assault on us all.

It is the Mission of Courage to;

  • Support victims & survivors of sexual assault
  • Empower victims & survivors to speak out against violence
  • Raise the communities awareness of violence against women
  • Eradicate the myths & stereotypes about sexual assault
  • To create legal & social change

The term 'victim' refutes the belief that women are responsible for their assaults.

The use of the term 'survivor' confirms the ability of victims to take some control back of their lives,

whilst acknowledging their resilience, strength and courage.
