WHAT IS BIODIESEL?

Biodiesel is an environmentally friendly fuel that can be used in any diesel engine without modification.

It is produced from renewable fats and oils (vegetable or animal), by reaction with an alcohol. The chemical reaction, called transesterification, also produces GLYCERINE.

Biodiesel burns much cleaner than diesel fuel, substantially reducing emissions associated with road transport. This means less pollution in our skies, and a substantial reduction in associated health problems.

Biodiesel has substantially less Greenhouse gas emissions when compared to fossil diesel. Biodiesel made from used cooking oil has been proven by the CSIRO and Australian Greenhouse Office, to have the lowest life cycle emissions of any transport fuel.

Biodiesel, being a 'bio' product, breaks down in soil and water very rapidly as it is seen as food by microbes.

Biodiesel also has far greater lubricity than conventional (fossil) diesel fuel - thus providing superior protection against engine and fuel system 'wear & tear'.

"Home-brewers" of biodiesel most commonly produce their fuel from Used Cooking Oil, helping to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

Overseas, biodiesel has become widely commercially available, with USA set to use more than 100 million litres - and Germany set to use over 1 billion litres - in 2004! Commercial plants in Australia are already operating, with several more already planned to open.
